CHEFS Network's Community Programs

CHEFS Network School Careers Program

We began our program of visiting schools and colleges to inform and educate hospitality students about careers in the most exciting of any industry. Our information sessions have been very well received, and we have enjoyed both  them and the feedback we get from the students and teachers.

Accelerated Cooks Apprenticeship (ACA)

CHEFS Network was part of a strategic alliance that saw us and the Liquor Hospitality Miscellaneous Union (LHMU), Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), Restaurant & Catering Association (RACA), and Australian Hotels Association (AHA) conceive, develop and implement the ACA. The ACA program is the only realistic, achievable and sustainable answer that has been proposed in response to the skills crisis we are all acutely aware of. There are now 12 advanced apprentices working in industry and making a worthwhile contribution to their own, and our industry’s future.

Accelerated Apprenticeships

CHEFS Network Fundraising Trivia Nights

Dust off your copies of Larousse, Herrings and Pellaprat; Can you remember the classic dishes and terminology? There will good times and good prizes to be had for all foodies and chefs in Canberra's premiere food trivia fundraising night. Look out for the next in our events calendar.

CHEFS Network Sponsored Culinary Competitions

Competitions are designed to allow working Apprentices, Chefs and Cooks to use and enhance the skills they use every day in working kitchens, allowing participants to display their skills in a realistic environment that is relevant to, and rewarding for them in a meaningful way. The very experienced culinary skills teachers at the Canberra Institute of Technology judge these competitions.

Skills Crisis And Overseas Chefs

There are beneficial ways to use overseas Chefs and Cooks to help Australia through the current skills crisis. These ways ensure that all parties are happy with what they have been promised and what they receive. Which is why CHEFS Network is currently in discussion with skilled, experienced, overseas Chefs with the aim of welcoming them to the ACT & Region.

It’s a wrap! Jameson Irish Whiskey has Aussie film festival sponsorships covered

Jameson Irish Whiskey continues to affirm its place as one of the country’s major film supporters, announcing a string of film festival sponsorships for the year ahead.

Last year as Festival Director of the Canberra Short Film Festival I had the pleasure of having Jameson provide their support - making the Festival the most successful yet. Not only did they sponsor the national prize for best film, they provided free cocktails to the public and the staff who hosted were absolute professionals. The cocktails were amazing too; Jameson & Apple Juice, Jameson with Cranberry & Lime and Jameson with Ginger Ale. I used to be Bourbon & Coke lover but I am converted.

On the back of a great partnership with Bondi Short Film Festival in November 2008, Jameson kicks off 2009 with Flickerfest, Australia’s only Academy accredited short film festival held at Bondi Pavilion from January 9-18. Short film lovers and aficionados will have the opportunity to experience the smooth taste of Jameson Irish Whiskey with their favourite mixer at the Flickerfest bar.

On February 22 Jameson again takes the stage as the official spirit of Tropfest, the world’s
largest and best known short film festival. With Tropfest now screened live in six Australian
cities, this sponsorship gives the brand national exposure and is proving to be a lucrative
partnership.

Jameson is also a major partner of the St Kilda Film Festival, now in its 26th year and running from May 26-31 2009. The Irish Whiskey is also sponsoring Melbourne’s Rooftop Cinema above the popular Cookie Bar running until March 14. The Rooftop Cinema has become one of Melbourne’s ‘must dos’ during summer with more than four months of film classics screened
above the city skyline.

As part of its sponsorship of each of the festivals, Jameson will be the exclusive spirit, with mixed Jameson drinks available across all bars. Jameson will also screen the first three short films produced by the whiskey brand’s film production arm - John Jameson Productions.

The three films were written by the winners of the inaugural John Jameson Productions scriptwriting competition, and it is hoped their screenings will inspire other aspiring scriptwriters to enter the 2009 competition.

On a global level, Jameson has long been a supporter of film, sponsoring the Dublin International Film Festival as well as the Independent Spirit Awards in LA.

Jameson Brand Manager Monica Hart said the film festival sponsorships provided the brand with excellent national exposure.

“We are broadening our support of film festivals this year as it’s proven a strong platform to
showcase our great tasting product across the bars while at the same time encouraging creative
people to engage with Jameson through the John Jameson Productions script-writing
competition,” she said.

“The scriptwriting competition really resonated strongly with our consumers and presents a very
real opportunity for aspiring writers to get their first break in the film industry which is
notoriously difficult to crack.”

Entries for the 2009 competition are now open. Visit www.johnjamesonproductions.con.au for
more information.

About John Jameson Productions
Launched in February 2008, John Jameson Productions is an initiative of Jameson Irish Whiskey.

John Jameson Productions has been established to facilitate an Australian short film script writing
competition for aspiring filmmakers. To enter the competition applicants were required to write
a 200-word synopsis of their short film idea. The only criteria was that the film must have an
“unexpected ending”.

The first three films from John Jameson Productions were screened at a gala film Premiere on
Thursday November 13 and will be screened at film festivals across the country in 2009.

The John Jameson Productions website (www.johnjamesonproductions.com.au) was the central
point of contact for the competition and the site continues to act as an online resource for
amateur filmmakers offering opportunities for online networking, discussion forums, tools and
professional advice.

Entries for the 2009 John Jameson Productions Scriptwriting Competition are now open. Visit
www.johnjamesonproductions.com.au for further information.
